Finding a CanTRA Member Centre

Becoming a CanTRA Member Centre

All new CanTRA centres begin as Provisional Members for up to a maximum of two years.

All Member Centres are required to meet CanTRA's Risk Management Standards.

Steps in the Formation of a Therapeutic Riding Centre
  1. Form an Administrative Committee, which should include at least five members: Chairperson, Vice Chairperson, Secretary/Treasurer and two Members at Large.
  2. Decide on the name of the centre/group.
  3. Become a CanTRA member. Submit centre/group name and logo for approval (to ensure there is no duplication).
  4. Contact a lawyer who is willing to donate time and service; he/she may be willing to assist with the Constitution and By-Laws.
  5. Apply to register the name of the centre/group (your local MPP's office will advise you).
  6. Apply for status as a charitable, tax-exempt organization (your local MPP's office will advise you).
  7. Review insurance requirements (information is available from the CanTRA Head Office).
  8. Review Instructor Certification Guidelines (available from the CanTRA Head Office). Discuss available personnel and training requirements with the CanTRA Head Office.
  9. Determine the fee schedule for lessons.
  10. Determine the number of teaching lessons for a specific trial period, plus the number of horses and riders.
  11. Determine honorarium to be given to Instructors.
  12. Negotiate fee/donation of services concerning stalls, number of horses, feed, blacksmith, tack, veterinarian, etc.
  13. Lease or rental of an arena should be considered. Your lawyer will help with the formal written agreement.
