The Sarah and Richard Farr Scholarship Fund

Background and Purpose:

In November 2007, CanTRA recieved a first donation from the John and Sally Horsefall Eaton Foundation in the name of Sarah and Richard Farr, with a second donation to CanTRA in October, 2008. These funds have been given with the request that they be used at the grass roots level to enable children with disabilities to experience riding a horse.

We are very pleased to announce that we have received a third donation to continue the Sarah and Richard Farr Scholarship Fund.

The available funds have been divided into ‘partial scholarships’ of $200 each, which will be awarded to potential riders with disabilities from across the country who are financially marginalized.

Intent:

The scholarship fund is to provide the opportunity for children from financially marginalized families to participate in therapeutic riding programs, where the lack of funds on the part of the rider would normally prevent them from doing so.

Eligibility:

Applicants must meet the following criteria:
  • Under the cognitive age of 18
  • Have a disability
  • Be involved with or on a waiting list with one of CanTRA's member centres (the centre must be in good standing with CanTRA).
  • The potential rider needs financial assistance in order to participate in the program.
Application:
  1. Only one application per rider will be considered.
  2. Applications will be accepted until December 15, 2009.
  3. Applications must be submitted through a CanTRA member centre and endorsed by the rider's parent and either the Executive Director or the Head instructor.
  4. Applicants must complete the established form.
  5. Funding decisions will be made by December 30, 2009
Should any funds remain after December 30, 2009, there will be a call for additional submissions which will be reviewed on a first-come-first-served basis until all funds are disbursed. Should the funds be awarded but not used within one year of the award, the funds must be returned to CanTRA, in full for the purpose of distribution to another eligible rider.

If applications in excess of available funds are received, all applications will then be reviewed by a panel of 3-4 people which will include representatives from CanTRA's Honourary Directors as well as Sarah Farr. This panel will determine the distribution of partial scholarships based on application information.
